Go to Career Fair Plus

About two weeks before the fair, start planning. Decide what time you want to go, building in extra time in case you have to wait to speak to popular employers. You may need to ask permission to miss all or part of a class, and arrange to get notes from a classmate. You'll also want to make time to work on your resume and elevator pitch and research employers (the events below are a great opportunity to have an advisor help you!)

Research Employers

Use the Job & Internship Fair app to start researching employers. The app is also where the map of the fair will be published the day before the fair. You can search employers by the type of positions for which they're hiring (full- or part-time, fellowship, or internship), by degree area (arts, business, communications, etc.), and by diversity initiatives (equal opportunity for LGBTQA, underrepresented groups, veterans, persons with disabilities, etc.). You can also save favorite employers and take notes right in the app.

  • Use Career Fair Plus to mark favorite employers, make notes, etc. Download the app to your phone to take your notes with you. A map of employers will be added several days before the fair--help us save on paper maps!

Here are some other questions to think about:

  • Why does this organization interest me? (Their mission or values? The type of work they do? The work environment?)
  • What skills, experience, or qualities do I have that would benefit the organization? (You can draw from previous jobs or community service work, positions in clubs, courses you've taken, etc.)
  • What do I want to know about this organization that isn't readily available on their website/social media? (This will help you ask a smart question that shows you've done your research.)

Create/Update and Print your resume

  • Create or update your resume with our templates and guides.
  • Plan to attend How to Prepare for the Job Fair on Wednesday, September 4, 12:30-2 p.m. (three sessions on What to Expect, Resumes 101, and Elevator Pitches) or drop in for quick advice from an advisor between 2-4 p.m. Both events will take place in the Career Center--here's how to get to us.
  • Plan to check your resume with an advisor on Monday, September 9 from 12-6 p.m. in the Tavern.
  • Print 10-15 copies of your resume to bring to the fair (print in advance for free at the Career Center--the line at the library will be long the day of!)
  • Bring a pen and, if you choose, your business cards.

Work on Your Elevator Pitch

When you speak with employers at the fair, you want to give a short pitch that sets you apart and quickly summarizes your skills and interest in their organization.

Dress to Impress

  • Check out our guidelines on professional image
  • Plan your outfit in advance; you can message it to us via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram (@aucareercenter), or email if you have questions!
  • After you decide what to wear, clean and press your outfit in advance
