Parent & Family Philanthropy

Gifts made by Eagle parents make an incredible impact on the American University community each year.

More than 1,800 parents and grandparents of current and past students annually make gifts to benefit hundreds of areas on campus and thousands of students including student scholarships, schools, and colleges as well as student clubs and organizations.

While this year is different than anyone imagined, AU is committed to delivering a world-class education, no matter the location or modality. The AU experience goes beyond the cost of tuition alone, from internships, to outside-the-classroom pursuits, to responding to the unexpected. Gifts from AU parents and family members are a further investment in your student's future because those funds directly benefit their academic and extracurricular experience.

Parent and Family Philanthropy Priorities

The AU Parent Fund gives the university the greatest flexibility to respond to the unexpected and address the changing needs of our students, faculty, and staff. The Parent Fund ensures that our students continue to have access to cutting edge technology and the unique opportunities that AU is known for providing. Support from parents is essential to attracting and retaining the most inspiring faculty who educate and mentor our students and engage them in groundbreaking research.

AU Fund for Student Support provide students with the essential resources they need to thrive. Financial aid is life changing, and it ensures that an AU education is attainable to a talented and diverse range of students. The AU Fund for Student Support currently helps to provide financial aid to 80% of incoming students. It also provides stipends that cover the costs of taking on unpaid internships, textbooks, and research.

Through the Office of Campus Life, AU offers medical care, counseling services and health education programs. Now, more than ever, students’ wellness and mental health significantly impact their ability to thrive in a post-secondary education environment. These Centers are dedicated to service all AU students’ needs and plays a critical role in the university’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Market is a food pantry accessible to all AU students and remains open during this time. There are many situations which result in a student being unable to afford a meal.  Your gift will provide extra flexibility to volunteers and staff members when selecting food sources, help the Market remain fully stocked with the most popular items, and provide fresh fruits and vegetables. For example, a gift of $100 can support the cost of feeding a student for one month. You can help AU ensure all of our students are healthy, happy and engaged scholars.
