Family and medical leave

DC and Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) benefits are available to eligible faculty and staff. FML leave can provide as much as 16 weeks of unpaid time off for faculty and staff, which can be requested on an intermittent or continuous basis to care for a family member or to manage the faculty or staff member’s own medical condition.

The FML benefits approval process is administered by Prudential Insurance. For information on contacting Prudential to start a claim, see the Prudential Reporting an FMLA Absence or Disability brochure.

Under certain circumstances, staff can use accrued annual and/or sick leave to continue their pay while on an approved FML leave. Faculty with an approved modified work arrangement in conjunction with an approved FML leave will continue to receive pay while on leave.

Important notes regarding family medical leave

  • DC and Federal FML leaves run concurrently
  • FML medical leave runs concurrently with short term disability
