Finding Bipartisanship in a Divided Nation

On Tuesday, July 19th, former U.S. Congressman and CIA officer Will Hurd (R-TX) joined Amy K. Dacey, executive director of American University’s Sine Institute of Policy & Politics, for a conversation about his book American Reboot: An Idealist’s Guide to Getting Big Things Done.
The book has been described as a forward-thinking playbook for how our nation can live up to its ideals of bipartisanship, inclusivity, and democratic values.
The virtual discussion focused on the need for Americans to come together to preserve democratic values and remain competitive on the world stage. Congressman Hurd discussed his experiences in Congress and the CIA and emphasized that Americans have more uniting them than keeping them apart.
“I don’t care if I was in deep blue areas or ruby red areas. People want to believe in something larger than themselves,” Hurd said. “They want to focus on putting food on the table, a roof over their head, and making sure the people they love are healthy and happy.”
The Sine Summer Series builds on AU’s “Challenge Accepted” campaign, which highlights the passionate and engaged AU community and the meaningful change it creates in local, national, and global pursuits. The next event, “Policy, Politics, and Predictions,” will be held on August 18th at 12 PM. The event will feature a conversation with Sine Fellows Barbara Comstock, William Kristol, Katherine Miller, and Janet Rodriguez about issues relating to the 2022 midterm elections. Register here.
