Joseph Riquelme brings over 20 years of leadership experience and endless curiosity to his role as American University’s first Vice Provost & Chief Online Officer. Joseph oversees the creation and delivery of digital and online educational programs that meet students at all stages of their academic pursuits wherever they are—on campus, online, and through hybrid learning models. He cultivates a collaborative culture and challenges teams to bring American University to the forefront of online education by continually developing and implementing innovative strategies.
Prior to his position as Chief Online Officer, Joseph served as Assistant Vice President of Online Education at Florida International University (FIU). At FIU, he successfully developed and launched more than 100 online degree programs, supported more than 1,000 unique courses and more than 46,000 students per year, and oversaw a 378% increase in enrollment for FIU Online. Joseph led the modernization of FIU’s online education unit, enhancing information management, student recruitment and enrollment, faculty development, and instructional design.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Finance and his master’s in International Business from FIU. Joseph credits the United Parcel Service (UPS)–where his career included roles as Industrial Engineer Supervisor, Finance Manager and Operations Supervisor–for providing him with a solid foundation in operational management, predictive analytics, and customer service.

The Vice Provost and Chief Online Officer will build and lead AU’s new digital education strategy office, which will collaborate with academic and other units to coordinate marketing, enrollment, and learner support for online and hybrid programs. This position will also support coordination between cross-school programs and provide ongoing research and analysis of program success. The VPCOO will develop digital learning initiatives, and address how to deploy online and digital education to support distance degree programs; enhance the experience of campus-based undergraduate, graduate, and professional students through digital tools and materials; and serve the needs of learners at all stages.
The Vice Provost and Chief Online Officer will collaborate with the president, provost, deans, faculty, and other university stakeholders on developing recommendations for expanding existing online offerings and developing new programs. This position will lead the assessment of AU’s existing online partnerships, including their opportunities and limitations. And will also serve as the central relationship manager, in collaboration with the deans, with AU’s online partners.
