Research Administration at American University consists of several offices with varied roles and responsibilities that are all essential to the overall management of sponsored awards and contracts. These offices include: Office of Research, Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), Office of Research Integrity (ORI), and Grants & Contracts Accounting (GCA).
The Office of Research works with the American University’s schools, colleges, and research centers to enhance the university’s impact by attracting external funding for research, scholarship, and creative activity. The Office of Research supervises the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and the Office of Research Integrity (ORI).
The Office of Research provides the following services:
Funding Opportunites: OR provides competitive internal research grants to support faculty research, scholarship, professional and creative activities.
Proposal Development: Grant writing assistance is available for faculty members who are applying for external awards. Please contact Jeannine Bulbulia, for more information.
Research Promotion: The office can assist faculty and graduate students with promoting research via social media, online articles, and other communication channels. Contact Jennifer Maher for more information.
OSP is responsible for all pre-award and non-financial post-award functions including proposal submissions, the negotiation and acceptance of all sponsored awards and agreements on behalf of American University. The office assists American University faculty and staff with interpretation of sponsor polices/guidelines, including applicable regulations, sponsored programs training, education, and communication.
ORI manages AU’s Institutional Review Board for Protection of Human Subjects in Research (IRB) and ensures compliance with federal standards of research safety and integrity across the university.
The Controller's Office- GCA oversees the management of sponsored project funds activity for the university. They provide sound financial reporting to the AU research community as well as to funding agencies (federal and non-federal).
