Tuition Grant Program for DC Teachers

American University's School of Education is committed to the continued development of public educators in the DC community. In this tradition, American University has designed a teacher training grant program to assist teaching professionals in gaining new expertise and obtaining academic credentials without formally enrolling in a degree program.

Under the provisions of the Tuition Grant Program for DC Public and Public Charter School Teachers, qualified participants who meet specified course pre-requisites, are eligible to enroll in any undergraduate or graduate level class. This opportunity is made available to non-degree students only. Students in degree programs are not eligible for this grant program. A maximum of twelve credit hours may be transferable into a degree program at a later date if all course requirements are met and the student achieves a satisfactory grade.

Participation in the grant program does not automatically guarantee acceptance into a degree program. Students must meet all admission standards and apply for admission.

Career Switcher Discount

The School of Education values the experience and tested knowledge of those successful careers outside of education. This experience and knowledge is an asset in the classroom and provides a strong foundation to a beginning career in teaching. We offer an almost 30% discount on most of our MAT classes to career-switchers. Career switchers include but are not limited to professionals outside of education, retirees and early leavers from the military, including numerous government agencies and private sector workplaces. Educational Equity Scholarship

The Educational Equity Scholarship was established in 2006. The scholarship provides support to deserving full or part-time students from under-represented populations within the university community pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the School of Education. Recipients must show strong academic achievement and a record of community service.

The Ganek Family Student Teacher Mini Grants for Innovation in Education

The purpose of the Ganek Family Student Teacher Mini Grants program is to foster and support student teachers in the development of inventive classroom activities, lessons, projects, and experiments. The grants are designed to enable student teachers to explore new methodologies and experiment with activities and lessons while under the supervision of cooperating teachers in local schools. Mini grants are awarded every fall and spring semester to student teachers who promote academic excellence and design exciting learning experiences which meet curriculum standards.
